Enabling, Configuring, and using Remote Assistance

The are three parts that go into setting up Windows XP Professional to allow someone to remote assist your computer.

    1. We need to allow inbound remote controlling. By default Windows XP Professional allows this.

    2. You must create an invitation file and send it to the person who will be helping you.

    3. You need to allow them to assist you.

How to setup Remote Assistance.

Click Start

Click "All Programs" < Fig 1.1 >

Click "Remote Assistance"

Click the "Invite someone to help you" link < Fig 1.2 >

Click the "Save invitation as a file" link < Fig 1.3 >

Leave the Name as it is entered, and click continue < Fig 1.4 >

Ensure the "Require the recipient to use a password" is checked.

Enter in a password twice, then click "Save Invitation" (once to set it and a second to confirm it). You will need to get the password to us  by some means. We do not recommend sending the Remote Invitation and the password in the same email message. Either send a second email or use some type of Instant Messaging program.< Fig 1.5 >

Select a location to save the invitation file, then click "Save". You will need to be able to find this file in a few moments and send it to us. < Fig 1.6 >

Windows XP will then tell you where you saved the file. < Fig 1.7 >

That is all there is to configure Remote Assistance so that we can work on your computer.

Configuring / Creating the Remote Invitation File.

After receiving the invitation to assist, the assistant will attempt to contact your computer. < Fig 2.1 > You must allow the connection or nothing can happen.

The first screen that appears allows the two parties to chat, and discuss what the problem is or what needs to be fixed. < Fig 2.2 >

The assistant will at some point attempt to take control and show or just fix what ever the problem is. < Fig 2.3 > At ANY TIME the person sitting at the local computer can hit the ESC key and immediately halt the assisting computer control of the local computer.
